Can anyone point me to documentation on how to setup the RDB module with the oracle database. Our sys admin has installed python and we have the oracle client as well. However when I try to import RDB I get the error below. I have searched for some documentation but have been unable to find any.

Python 2.5.2 (r252:60911, May 17 2008, 15:00:48) [DECC] on OpenVMS
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import rdb
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
File "/python_root/local/rdb/__init__.py", line 40, in <module>
import _rdb
ImportError: %LIB-E-ACTIMAGE, error activating image $1$DGA9384:[SYS1.SYSCOMMON.][SYSLIB]SQL$INT.EXE;
-RMS-E-FNF, file not found

This probably mean that Rdb in not installed on your system, or correctly started.

Which Rdb version do you have?

I understand a little better now. I did some research and Oracle RDB is a fully functional database which is separate from the normal Oracle database. Originally I was thinking Oracle RDB was some kind of client for the Oracle database. What I was trying to do with Python was to access our existing Oracle database. Are there any modules on OpenVMS which can do this?

What you need is the cx_module, from http://cx-oracle.sourceforge.net/:
Quote:
cx_Oracle is a Python extension module that allows access to Oracle databases and conforms to the Python database API specification. This module is currently built against Oracle 9.2.0, 10.2.0 and 11.1.0.

You will have to download the source code and build the module.

I don't have Oracle, so I can't build myself the cx_oracle module.

Probably not what you want or what you need, but... Smile

There is also an (unsupported, but works) "Oracle Gateway for Rdb".
That one makes an Oracle "Classic" database look like a Rdb database
to the programming tools (like Python). Still needs Rdb installed, though,
and is mainly usable if you have both Rdb and Oracle installed already...
